2. To simplify the process for overseas Chinese and foreign students applying for work permits, the Ministry of Labor amended the relevant regulations on August 26, 2024. The amendment extended the maximum validity of work permits for foreign students enrolled in public or private universities and for overseas Chinese or other Chinese-descent students studying in public or private high schools or above from "up to 6 months" to "up to 1 year." Key points include:

(1) For work permit applications submitted between October 1 of the first semester and September 30 of the following year, the validity period cannot exceed September 30 of the next year. However, applicants who provide a student ID copy stamped with registration for the first semester of the next academic year or proof of registration are exempt from this restriction. For example, if an overseas Chinese student registers for the new academic year and applies for a 1-year work permit on November 30, 2024, the permit will only be valid until September 30, 2025.

(2) If an overseas Chinese student applies for a 1-year work permit on July 31, 2025, the permit would typically be valid only until September 30, 2025. However, if proof of registration for the first semester of the 2025 academic year is provided, the permit may be issued for a full year starting from the approval date. For instance, if the permit is approved on August 10, 2025, it will be valid until August 9, 2026. For foreign students enrolled in language courses, the permit's validity is limited to the current registration period.

(3) A work permit becomes invalid if the student suspends studies, withdraws, graduates, or completes a language or training course. Using the invalid permit for work violates Article 43 of the Employment Services Act.

(4) Applications must be submitted online via the "Foreign Professionals Online Application System." Required documents, application processes, and related information can be found on the Workforce Development Agency's website: https://ezworktaiwan.wda.gov.tw.
