According to Articles 43 and 68 of the Employment Service Act, foreign nationals may not work in Taiwan without obtaining a work permit through an employer. Violators may be fined NT$30,000 to NT$150,000. Article 50 further stipulates that international students enrolled in public or legally registered private colleges and universities may work a maximum of 20 hours per week, except during winter and summer vacations. A work permit issued by the Ministry of Labor will become invalid if the student takes a leave of absence, withdraws from school, or otherwise loses student status.

According to Articles 2 and 2-1 of the Qualifications and Review Standards for Foreign Workers Engaging in Work under Article 46, Paragraph 1, Subparagraphs 1 to 6 of the Employment Service Act, foreign nationals applying to work in positions covered by Article 46, Paragraph 1, Subparagraphs 1 to 6 may not have engaged in unauthorized employment within the three years preceding the application.

Students are strongly encouraged to note that those who wish to work part-time while studying or remain in Taiwan for employment after graduation must apply for and obtain the required work permit from the Ministry of Labor before starting work. Failure to comply with the Employment Service Act may result in legal penalties and affect future employment eligibility in Taiwan.
